Hello! I’m Glen Berman.
I’m an interdisciplinary PhD candidate at the Australian National University.
I study the construction of Artificial Intelligence as a research field and practice.

I’m based at the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science, where I study under the supervision of Jochen Trumpf, Jenny Davis, Elizabeth Williams, and Kate Williams. My research is at the intersection of Infrastructure Studies and Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI), focusing on the construction of AI as a research field and practice. Through active collaborations with sociologists of expertise, computer scientists, and human-computer interaction researchers within and outside of academia, I am developing a sociological lens to inform the development of Responsible AI interventions. Alongside my PhD research, I am also a Senior Research Officer on the AI as Infrastructure project at the HASS Digital Research Hub at ANU. You can find my recent work on my Google Scholar page, and see a longer list in my resume.
Previously, I was a Student Researcher at Google Research’s Responsible AI and Human-Centered Technology research group. Prior to commencing my PhD in 2020, I completed a Masters in Applied Cybernetics at ANU. I spent the previous decade leading technology-driven social change organisations. I co-founded a national nonprofit in Australia, focused on building the capacity of civil society organisations to create systems change, which to date has incubated 23 organisations and trained over 700 community change makers. I helped a global online movement focused on corporate accountability scale from 1 million to 16 million members and built its staff team up from 15 to 45 advocates, technologists, and communication experts. Most recently, I supported the largest youth-focused foundation in Australia to develop its COVID response strategy. Since beginning my PhD, I’ve stayed active in Australia’s civil society sector by facilitating the Progress Fellowship.
